I got my wisdom tooth pulled at 38!
No joke! Who gets a wisdom tooth at 38?!
I went to the dentist on February 6th and next thing I knew there was a wisdom tooth that wasn’t there 6 months before! On February 14th I went to the oral surgeon to get it taken out!
If any of you are like me, I absolutely HATE the dentist. Sweat, chills, and anxiety every time I’m sitting in the chair. $h*t … I’d rather head to my obgyn appointment each year than the dentist (sorry for the TMI guys).
Knowing I was going to have the tooth removed, I told them I had to be knocked out. No way could I see the tools they were going to use to get the tooth out.
But, why am I talking about my tooth?
The part that surprised me the most was that I didn’t swell or look like a chipmunk the next day. Now, yes it was only 1 tooth and not 4, but I started thinking since I couldn’t sleep and had a cup of coffee at 4pm that day (since I missed my AM coffee).
What are the things that I am doing in my daily life to have helped me recover from this so easily? It’s the same darn healthy lifestyle checklist that we give to our STRONG 45 crew or the same habits we constantly talk about when someone new steps into the gym. It’s also the same habits I preach to athletes that want to take things to the next level and have an edge on their competition.
- Sleep (focus on 7-8 hours of sleep per night). Keep a similar wake and sleep time, 7 days per week.
- Hydration: Drink about ½ bodyweight of water per day + electrolytes
- Eat real, nutrient dense foods (avoid/minimize processed foods)
- Avoid Alcohol
- Walk Daily / Get outside
- Reduce Stress (Meditate, yoga, listen to calming music)
- Avoid added sugar
Everyone is at a different part in their journey. Maybe just showing up at the gym consistently is step one. While step 2 may be focusing on sleep.
All of the above habits will not only help you to improve your body composition, but will improve your health and help you recover from a surgery; if needed.
Motivation may help you get started, but it goes away quickly.
It’s about committing and dedicating yourself to these lifestyle habits. Making small changes over time.
