Finding Balance: How I Prioritize Self-Care as a Busy Gym Owner and Mom
Just recently, I got so excited as we were going to have a 1.5 week break between sports seasons. My little guy (3 years old) was wrapping up his winter session of Little Ninjas while my 6 year old was finishing a long season of ice hockey plus basketball. The break was short lived. As we got into the new sports, things got crazy.
As my little guy had 1 more session left of tiny ninjas, here was our one week schedule:
Monday: Little Ninja
Tuesday: soccer
Wednesday: soccer
Thursday: lacrosse
Friday: OFF 🙂
Saturday/Sunday: Games
As a gym owner and a mom of two active boys, my days are a whirlwind of early mornings, lunches, school drop-offs, work, practices, and game days. Some days, it feels like my schedule is completely hijacked by their sports and activities—(and I know we aren’t even in the thick of it yet).
But over time, I’ve learned that taking care of myself isn’t just important—it’s essential.
The Overwhelm is Real
Between running a business, coaching others on their fitness journeys, and managing my boys’ ever-growing list of practices and games, there have been moments when I’ve put myself last.
One Healthy Habit at a Time
Here’s what I’ve learned: when life feels overwhelming, trying to “do it all” perfectly only leads to frustration. Instead, I focus on one habit at a time—whether it’s prioritizing protein in my meals, squeezing in a 20-minute strength session, 30 minute walk or simply getting enough water. Small, consistent efforts lead to long-term success. I have also had to re-adjust my schedule at times by getting up earlier, just to get extra self care.
Here is an exact example of my focus/non-negotiable from last year:
July-November 2024: Walk a minimum of 45 minutes per day. Anything else was a bonus.
December 2024: Mobility / Yoga: Got up and did a minimum of 10 minutes of yin yoga each morning
January 2025: 10,000 Swing Challenge
February: Had to recertify my strongfirst certification so one arm pushups and jerk practice was my focus
March 2025: Consistent movement every day
April 2024: Will be focusing on strength as I have felt I have lost a lot from some of my adventures from 2024.
Why It Matters
Taking care of myself isn’t about aesthetics or keeping up with a fitness routine—it’s about being strong for my family. When I feel good, I have more energy for my boys, more patience on the tough days, and more resilience to handle life’s chaos.
The Takeaway
If you’re in a season of feeling stretched thin, give yourself grace. You don’t have to overhaul your entire lifestyle overnight. Just focus on one healthy habit at a time. Because when you take care of yourself, you show up as your best—for your kids, your work, and yourself.
